SKD61 steel plate application for what product?

SKD61 steel is a steel grade used quite popular in mold making including two types: solid sheet and round. So SKD61 steel plate application for any product?

SKD61 steel is a common grade used in mold making. Especially, in molding processing in high heat-resistant environment. SKD61 steel comes in two forms: solid plate and round. In this article, we will present the SKD61 steel plate application for which product?
1. What is SKD61 steel?
SKD61 steel is the symbol of Japanese standard steel grade (JIS - Japan Industrial Standard) which is widely used in hot and cold industries, but SKD61 steel is preferred in hot industry (often used as hot stamping).
Characteristics of SKD61 steel:
- High abrasion resistance because it contains Molybdenum alloy (Molybdenum).
- Balance high temperature and ductility. Unlike conventional steels, this ability gives SKD61 steel a great advantage in high-temperature working environments.
- When heat treated, SKD61 has a hardness of about 50HRC 55HRC. Note: In case, the hardness is too high, it will make SKD61 steel brittle and brittle.
- Machining well less deformation after heat treatment. Chromium has the effect of improving the anti-ram and high temperature durability because it creates fine small carbides when the RAM is secreted at temperatures above 25000C, so it has anti-ram resistance to temperatures of 2500C ÷ 30000C.
2. Application of SKD61 steel plates
Thanks to the above-mentioned characteristics, SKD61 steel sheet application for the following products:

SKD61 steel plate application for any product?
a. Application of SKD61 steel plate in pressure casting
Pressure casting is a technology in which liquid metal is filled and solidified under the effect of high pressure. Pressure casting mold includes 02 half molds when starting the process of casting two half molds will close, liquid metal has quantitatively poured into the injection chamber.
The pouring time is very fast, only about tens of seconds at a speed of hundreds of m / s, and a pressure of several hundred to thousands of atmostphere. The pressure is maintained until the casting is completely solidified. Withdrawing the intestine from the casting, the movable half mold separates from the stationary half. The release pin that pushes the mold out of the mold ends a casting cycle and the new cycle begins.
Mold material, gut and push pins usually have durability, friction, abrasion, good thermal conductivity ... And apply SKD61 sheet steel in pressure molding when able to withstand heat and ability to hold hardness in high temperature environment. Molds and mold details are subjected to complex heat treatment to improve the working performance, which requires sharpening, polishing, chrome plating and nickel coating. Other technologies may also be used, such as staining, anodization or surface phosphate. Mold making needs absolute precision to ensure the quality of the main mold product, so the mold manufacturing process must be strictly conducted and skillfully manufactured by skilled engineers.
b. Application of SKD61 steel plate in aluminum alloy pressure die casting
Metal pressure casting technology mainly uses Al-Si-Cu-Mg aluminum alloy system. Silicon (Si) works to increase fluidity and durability. Copper (Cu) has the effect of chemically stabilizing the alloy, but tends to concentrate in the crystal, reducing the corrosion resistance of the alloy (The amount of copper added usually does not exceed 4%). Magnesium (Mg) improves corrosion resistance, ductility and impact toughness. The amount of Mangie added can be up to 10%. Silicon and Mangie form Mg2Si compound, soluble in solid solution on the basis of aluminum, increasing the brittleness of the alloy by more than 1.2%.
The most widely used aluminum alloys: AlSi12, AlSi9Mg0.3, AlMg8, AlSi8Cu4.
With the characteristics of high abrasion resistance, high temperature balance and ductility, corrosion resistance, good machining, low deformation after heat treatment, the aluminum alloy pressure die casting is mainly made of steel. SKD61.
